Ilocos Norte to host R1AA 2019

Laoag City—The provincial government of Ilocos Norte will be hosting this year’s Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) Meet set on March 3-8, 2019.
Education Program Specialist on MAPEH Gene Reginaldo said that the provincial government expects around 10,256 delegates from the different Schools Division in Region 1.

This is the reason why the Schools Division of Ilocos Norte (SDOIN) in cooperation and partnership with the provincial government are both busy in the preparation of the playing venues, billeting school, opening program, construction of related infrastructures, souvenir programs and organization of the different committees.

As developed, Mr. Reginaldo said that the SDOIN has now identified the eight billeting schools in Ilocos Norte and six schools in Laoag City.

Aside from the Marcos Stadium as the main playing venue, there will also be areas in Bacarra for gymnastics, football elementary, softball secondary both boys and girls and archery.

A San Nicolas mall will also be the place for taekwondo, arnis and table tennis. Still pending approval is the Padre Annibale location for sepak takraw.

Mr. Reginaldo said this year’s R1AA will be adopting the Olympic Medal System which means, there will be no champions this year.

This system, Mr.  Reginaldo explained, means that there will be no more division to be declared as champion. Instead, The R1AA management will only be announcing the best division in all the field of sports event.

Record shows that It was point system last year wherein medals were converted into points.

He said that weekend trainings for the province’s athletes already started right after the provincial meet.

It was learned that Ilocos Norte was ranked fifth overall last year. 

SDOIN superintendent Vilma Eda for her part also discouraged the use of plastics for the duration of the R1AA.

Ms. Eda said that it was also emphasized during the Regional MANCOM meeting held here not to assign janitors in all the billeting schools, instead, everyone should be responsible their respective wastes.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops.
