NUEVA ERA, Ilocos Norte—The municipality's 4th Joseph Bala Arzadon (JBA) Day on June 19 was highlighted by the launching of a coffee table book entitled Linong, commemorating the life and legacy of the late local leader.

Every June 19, Nueva Era honors Arzadon, who served the municipality with distinction as mayor, vice mayor, and Sangguniang Bayan member. The occasion was marked with a Thanksgiving Mass, wreath-laying ceremony, the book launching, and a tree-planting activity — all reflecting the values JBA championed throughout his years of service.

Nueva Era Vice Mayor Caroline Arzadon-Garvida, his daughter, said her father's unwavering dedication to public service, environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and the protection of the municipality's territorial integrity continue to inspire generations of Nueva Eranians.

"May we continue to honor his memory by working together for a progressive, resilient, and united Nueva Era. Let us continue to grow, remember, and celebrate his enduring legacy," she said.

On behalf of the Arzadon-Garvida family, the vice mayor expressed gratitude to all who joined in commemorating her father's life.

This year marks the fifth death anniversary of the former mayor, though it is only the fourth time the LGU has celebrated JBA Day, which was formally established under Municipal Ordinance No. 50, Series of 2022, approved by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, declaring June 19 as JBA Day in Nueva Era.

The ordinance recognizes Arzadon's contributions to environmental conservation and his role in preserving the cultural integrity of the Tingguian people, of whom he served as tribal chieftain for over 30 years.

Prior to his political career, Arzadon rendered 22 years of service under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as a forester, spearheading reforestation and afforestation projects across Ilocos Norte. He served as mayor from 1988 to 1998, vice mayor from 2001 to 2010, and Sangguniang Bayan member from 2010 to 2019, with the economic upliftment of Nueva Eranians as one of his core advocacies.

Arzadon-Garvida said it is both necessary and fitting to recognize her father's accomplishments and his lasting contributions to the environment, the people, and the municipality of Nueva Era as a whole. (With reports from the Office of the Mayor)

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
