LAOAG CITY—The City of Laoag marked its 61st Charter Day on June 19, 2026 with a celebration befitting its growth, as the city government under Mayor James Bryan Q. Alcid distributed a wide array of vehicles, equipment, and social services to LaoagueƱos as a gesture of gratitude and a fulfillment of promises made since he assumed office.

The festivities opened with a “Diana Around the City”, followed by a thanksgiving mass at Aurora Park. The multi-awarded Samiweng Singers, performed a rendition of "Happy Birthday" for Laoag, while the creative storytelling winner presented Talugading ni Anastacia G. Tupas, honoring the Bannuar a LaoagueƱo and founder of the Philippine Nursing Association.

Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos, the guest speaker, congratulated the city and its people on their continuing progress under Alcid's leadership.

The highlight of the celebration was the turnover of major assets, including two coasters, one pick-up truck, two ambulances, two advanced life support ambulances, and 80 e-bikes for barangay health workers — one for each of the city's 80 barangays. Four rescue boats were also added to bolster emergency response capabilities. Alcid said all vehicles will be used to speed up service delivery and strengthen emergency preparedness.

The city government also distributed 12 nego carts to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), 83 tents to tricycle operators and drivers’ associations (TODAs), and 35 shredder machines to farmers. Various farm inputs were likewise turned over to farmers, fishermen, and zanjeras. Five pulverizers were given to schools to help address plastic pollution.

Simultaneous with the main program, the city government's Alisto Serbisyo Para Ken Laoageno outreach was held at the Laoag City Multi-Purpose Hall, serving residents of Barangays 8, 9, and 10 with free medical, dental, haircut, and massage services, alongside the distribution of food packs and rice per household.

Joining Araneta-Marcos at the event were city officials, Liga ng mga Barangay representatives, various government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and city hall employees.

In his message, Alcid thanked LaoagueƱos for their trust and described the day's distributions as the first batch of commitments he made upon taking office.

"Kas tay kanayon ko nga ibagbaga nga alagaan dakayo iti husto, pag serbiyan dakayo iti pudno," the mayor said.

This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
