LAOAG CITY—A 136-megawatt wind farm project is being
proposed for Bangui, Ilocos Norte, reinforcing the province's reputation as one
of the country's leading renewable energy hubs.
The proposed development, with an investment of around
PHP8.4 billion, aims to harness the municipality's strong and consistent wind
resources to generate clean electricity, supporting the Philippines' transition
to renewable energy and helping meet the growing demand for sustainable power.
In a press release, Luzon Cleanergy Generation Inc., a
subsidiary of Aboitiz Renewables Inc., said the project is expected to cover
3,321 hectares across eight villages, including Payac, Bacsil, Malasin, Abaca,
Nagbalagan, Masikil, Manayon and San Lorenzo.
A public scoping activity has been scheduled on July 22,
2026, as part of the environmental assessment process, the Environmental
Management Bureau in Ilocos Region confirmed on Wednesday.
The EMB Ilocos Region said the public scoping is an early
stage in the environmental impact assessment process wherein the community and
other interested individuals will have an opportunity to raise concerns, ask
questions and offer recommendations before the project proceeds.
"All interested parties, organizations and agencies
are encouraged to provide inputs during the public scoping,” said the EMB
Ilocos Region in a public notice.
Luzon Cleanenergy said the project aims to augment the
demand for reliable and affordable power supply while contributing to national
development and households.
The company added that the proposal aligns with the
country’s renewable energy transition, which targets boosting the share of
clean energy in the national power mix to 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by
2040.
Aboitiz Renewables is currently pursuing an aggressive
expansion strategy to achieve 4,600 megawatts of clean energy capacity by 2030.
Its current asset portfolio includes solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal
technologies.
This includes a hybrid solar farm in Barangay Talingaan,
Laoag City with ongoing site acquisition. The project, which utilizes sand
dunes in Laoag City, is being expanded to accommodate a 187-megawatt-peak solar
farm and a 277-megawatt-hour battery storage system.
