Laoag wins 51st Gawad Saka national search

Laoag City—For the first time, the city of Laoag has emerged as a national winner in the 51st Gawad Saka Parangal sa Natatanging Magsasaka at Mangingisda, earning recognition at the Department of Agriculture’s annual search for outstanding contributors to the agriculture and fisheries sectors.

Held June 29 at the Philippine International Convention Center, the Gawad Saka awards honor farmers, fisherfolk, agricultural workers, extension managers, local government units and other partners whose work has helped strengthen food security and rural development across the country. Laoag’s national victory marks a milestone for the city’s agri-fishery sector.

City Agriculturist Sheila Marie Opelac said Laoag submitted six entries this year, three of which advanced to the national finals: Outstanding Corn Farmer Geoffrey Santiano Pascual, Outstanding Agricultural Extension Manager Sheila Marie N. Opelac, and Outstanding Local Government Unit, Laoag City. She said the city’s finalists reflected the depth of local support for farmers and fisherfolk, as well as the commitment of city personnel who prepared the necessary documents and requirements for validation within a short period.

Opelac thanked Laoag Mayor James Bryan Alcid, the city council, Liga ng mga Barangay President Roque Benjamin “Rbee” Ablan and other local offices for their sustained support to the agriculture and fisheries sector. She also credited the city’s agriculture personnel for their dedication and hard work in helping secure the recognition.

Alcid congratulated all those behind the award, saying the recognition reflects the city government’s effective and organized implementation of agriculture programs and projects. “Saan laeng a tropeo daytoy a kampeonato, maysa daytoy a pammadayaw iti tunggal nagaget nga ima tapno masigurado ti seguridad ti taraon ken kinarang-ay ti tunggal Laoagueño,” he said.

The city is set to receive a PHP2 million cash prize, which officials said will be used to support agriculture programs. Local leaders said the award is expected to further boost Laoag’s food security efforts, farm productivity and rural development initiatives.
