A Joint inspection
team from the Laoag City government revealed that six disco houses at the
city’s red-light district face closure orders after it was discovered that they
have no business permits.
The city’s Business Permit and
Licensing Office (BPLO) head Dr. Melvin Manuel confirmed this after the said
team served the order last week.
However, Manuel also learned
that those establishments are currently processing their business permit for
this year.
Earlier, Laoag City Mayor
Chevylle V. Fariñas gave them chances to settle their obligations and as such
were allowed to operate.
But as the year nears its end,
the inspection team discovered that they have yet to comply with the said
requirements and thus were given closure orders.
Aside from having no business
permits, Manuel also learned that these same establishments have also not been
paying their monthly rentals to the city government.
Meanwhile, Manuel stated that
they are also inspecting other business establishments in the city. In line
with this, he asked the assistance of barangay officials to report if they
learn of establishments operating without business permits.
The joint team is composed of
representatives from the offices of the City Engineer, City Assessor, City Treasurer,
City Health, City Licensing Division and the Zoning Department.
Manuel added that the team only
seeks assistance from the police if there is a closure order and the Social Work
and Development Office in cases where minors are concerned.
The team visits goes on regular
and surprise visits both in day time and night time.
Mayor Fariñas for her part said
that the city government is simply doing its role as she stressed that they are
serious in going after violators of the business permit law.
She added that the city
government applies the law to everyone and that the team is not only
concentrating at the “Discolandia” but all other establishments in the city both
in the rural or urban areas.
