LAOAG CITY—The Armed Forces
of the Philippines (AFP) in cooperation with the Philippine National Police
(PNP) are now validating reports on the presence of New Peoples’ Army (NPA) rebels
roaming in at least nine barangays in Ilocos Norte.
Acting provincial director P/Sr.
Supt. Antonio Mendoza Jr. there is a continuing process of validation on the
NPA sighting report.
The report cropped up
following the recent peace and order council meeting at the Tabacalera function
hall in Laoag City.
In the said meeting presided
by Ilocos Norte Gov. Ma. Imelda “Imee” R. Marcos, she urged law enforcers to
verify reports on NPA sightings, alleged extortion activities at the on-going
construction of wind power farms in Burgos and Pagudpud and in areas of Ilocos
Norte with mining and quarrying operations.
The Philippine Army however
reiterated that Ilocos Norte remains free from insurgents as there are no
reported influenced barangays since 2011 when the province was officially
declared “safe” from insurgencies.
The governor urged concerned
authorities to look into these to ensure investors that they are safe while
conducting business in the province.
