“Watch
out for food-borne diseases.”
This is the warning of the Provincial
Health Office to the public in response to the rise of food-borne diseases
during the hot summer months.
Dr. Artemio Gambalan,
provincial health officer said that as temperature increases, microbes also
tend to multiply faster.
“We must be very particular
on food preparation especially this summer when there is a high possibility of
food contamination,” Dr. Gambalan said after attending a consultative meeting
on the prevailing health concerns brought about by climate change.
Citing for example mobile
vendors of palamig or fresh coolers along the street corners
or near schools during hot summer months, Dr. Gambalan said that these
small-time entrepreneurs should pay attention to food safety by using potable
water.
Even before the onset of summer
months, the Department of Health (DOH) has already issued a health warning
against the six common diseases and conditions during the hottest time of the
year.
These diseases
are sunburn, flu, sore eyes, stomach ailments, skin diseases and rabies.
