Batac City—A new administration, a new look.

Batac mayor Albert D. Chua said the rehabilitation and improvement of the Batac Plaza is now in full swing.

Heavy equipment has been stationed in front of the Immaculate Conception Church as work commenced in redesigning this city’s center.

Mr. Chua said the redesign actually began during the term of former Batac mayor, now vice mayor, Jeffrey Jubal Nalupta.

He added that this current redesign is one of the “dreams and plans” of Ilocos Norte governor Ma. Imelda Josefa “Imee” R. Marcos. Ms. Marcos, he went on, want the redesign to make this city more beautiful and attractive to tourists

The fence of the said church is already dilapidated, hence the improvement here.

A rotunda with a fountain in the center will also be created between the church and the Batac City Hall.

To implement, this the local government here requested the Laoag Archdiocese for the inclusion of the church’s front area for the improvement plan. The Diocese acceded to the request.

As for vehicular traffic, Mr. Chua said light vehicles can still use the street to avoid heavy traffic.

The redesign is a joint project between the Batac and Ilocos Norte governments. Upon completion it would connect Ricarte Park, the city hall, the church, the empanada area, the Marcos mausoleum, and the Aglipay church.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
