LAOAG CITY—Sustaining its lead as the Philippines’ first province fully compliant to International Organization for Standardization, Ilocos Norte is again gearing up preparations for its re-certification, this year.

Over the past three years, local and foreign investors continue to expand business in this northern gateway of Luzon. Among these include the construction of more wind and solar power plants, Business Process Outsourcing and expansion of shopping malls that defines the new lifestyle of modern Ilocanos.

All these developments, according to provincial treasurer Josephine Calajate could have been attributed to the province’s ISO-accreditation and the strong leadership of Ilocos Norte Governor Ma. Imelda Josefa R. Marcos.

In a two-day training held at the Provincial Capitol recently, deputy management representative Miriam Ranchez said the training attended by the different department heads, division chiefs, technical staff and frontline service providers at the Capitol aims to equip them with adequate knowledge and skills on awareness and risk management, providing excellent service to clients.

Every year, an audit team conducts assessment of the different offices of the provincial government to determine based on paper trail if they passed the annual ISO-accreditation process.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops.
