Batac suspends fees for fire-affected market vendors

CITY OF BATAC— The city government of Batac has temporarily suspended the payment of business taxes, rental fees and garbage fees for market stall holders affected by the Batac Public Market fire for the third and fourth quarters of 2026.

Batac Councilor Martha Louise Aurora M. Borleo said the measure was approved through an ordinance to provide temporary financial relief and help affected vendors resume and rehabilitate their businesses.

The Batac Public Market fire damaged stalls and structures, destroyed inventories and disrupted business operations, leaving affected vendors with significant financial losses, Borleo said.

Under the ordinance, payment of the covered fees for the third and fourth quarters is suspended, but the amounts will still have to be paid on or before December 20, 2026.

Batac Mayor Christian Mark “Markee” Chua said most of the fire-affected stall holders have already resumed operations in temporary stalls on the second floor of the market building beside the fire-damaged section, with the necessary materials provided.

Chua said the city government will continue assisting the affected vendors until they fully recover from the incident.

The mayor also thanked the national and provincial governments, private organizations and individuals for extending financial assistance and livelihood support to the affected market vendors.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier inspected the damage caused by the July 5 fire and the site of the proposed new Batac Public Market during his visit to Ilocos Norte on August 7.

The President also announced an initial PHP150 million allocation through the Local Government Support Fund (LGSF) for the proposed reconstruction of the Batac Public Market.

Marcos was accompanied during the inspection by DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, Ilocos Norte 2nd District Representative Angelo Marcos Barba, Governor Cecilia Araneta Marcos, and Batac city officials led by Mayor Chua and Vice Mayor Albert D. Chua.
