The Provincial
Government of Ilocos Norte is set to open 600 summer job slots for students
this summer.
Nicole Rudio, new
head of the Provincial Employment Services Office (PESO) announced this as the summer
break is fast approaching.
Rudio said they
have submitted to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) the 600 slots
Capitol is ready to absorb in support of the government’s Special Program for
the Employment of Students (SPES) and to reinforce the ‘Task Force Trabaho’
(TFT) program, the provincial government initiated to create more jobs for
Ilocanos.
Established under
the Republic Act 9547, SPES is a work appreciation and bridging program which
caters to high school, college, vocational and out-of-school youth.
It aims to inspire
the youth to further their education by teaching them the valuable skills
towards productive work. Tasks included are assisting office staff, clerical
and simple utility work, green/environment-related activities, and computer
data encoding.
Last year, the
SPES beneficiaries, aged 15 to 25, received a salary of P311 per day, with
sixty percent of the wage coming from TFT funds and the remaining forty percent
of the hiring rate paid by DOLE.
On February 3 or
just in time for the weeklong celebration of Ilocos Norte’s 196th foundation
anniversary, another provincial job fair was conducted where thousands of job
applicants queued at the west wing of the Capitol parking lot to vie for over
5,000 overseas and local jobs.
According to
Rudio, there were at least 10 overseas and 27 local employers who participated
in the Ilocos Norte job fair to directly hire health professionals, factory
workers, graphic artists, fashion designers, accountants, engineers, steelmen,
masons, carpenters, welders, electricians, waiters and waitresses, cashiers,
sales representatives, and many other skilled and professional Filipino workers
who are in demand in Taiwan, Canada and the Middle East among others.
In support of the
job creation program of the government here and abroad, the PESO is regularly
conducting job fairs, including skills training to help applicants find jobs
with accredited agencies and employers.
