160K

More than 50 veteran runners took the ultra-challenge posed by the Ilocos Challenge 2014.

This year’s Ilocos Challenge featured two categories: 160-Kilometer Ultra and 102-Kilometer Ultra. The 160K category had a Vigan-Pagudpud route, while the 102K was a journey from Currimao to Pagudpud.

From the 34 participants in the 160K challenge, 28 runners successfully crossed the finish line. In the 102K, only 15 from the 20 runners were able to reach Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.

Besides the hardcore distance in both routes, they also hold extra-ordinary difficulties: scorching hot highway during the day and freezing cold hills at night.

Most of the participants groaned when they reached the Pasuquin-Burgos-Bangui area. Since it was already night when they arrived at the place, they were confronted with pitch-dark roads, numbing cold hills and great exhaustion.

But with the help of the police, barangay officials and tanods, they were able to cross the area safely and victoriously. Besides security, they also provided the participants with water, energy drinks and food.

Bacarra Vice Mayor Jonathan Ramit and the Bacarra Farm Lechon even surprised the runners with lechon dinner which replenished their strength and renewed their will to complete the ultra-marathon event.

Marcelo Bautista of Baguio City topped the 160K category. While, Joey Fallarcuna of Romblon finished as champion in the 102K category.

Bautista, who is a perennial podium finisher in the different ultra-marathons in the country and abroad, admitted that the Ilocos Challenge 2014 is the hardest local race he has ever experienced so far in his running career.

Other participants even opined that the route could easily qualify as a venue for international extreme-running events.

The next edition of Ilocos Challenge will be held in January 2015.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
