Laoag City—The city’s—and Ilocos Norte’s—most successful cooperative gained another feather in its cap.

The Government of Laoag Employees Development Cooperative (GLEDCO) was recently named 2014’s Most Outstanding Cooperative in Region I under the Large Scale Category. The Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) gave the said award.

In behalf of the all GELDCO members, Laoag City government accountant and GLEDCO general manager Edgar Pascual thanked the CDA, the city government and GLEDCO members for a “job well done”

Mr. Pascual believes that GLEDCO was chosen as the most outstanding due to its performance and as the fastest growing cooperative in the whole Ilocos region. Other cooperatives in the region which have been in existence for 30-40 years have not grown as fast as GLEDCO.

Mr. Pascual also pointed to the support of the Laoag government and their having a cooperative officer in Ms. Estella Damo, who is very actively promoting all of the coop’s activities.

The awarding ceremony was held in Oasis Country Resort in San Fernando City, La Union on July 10, 2014 in time for the regular 1st Quarter Regional Cooperative Development Council (RCDC) meeting.

Aside from being the Most Outstanding Cooperative in the region, Gledco also received the Best Performing Local Government Unit – Cooperative Development Office category under the office of the city mayor.

GLEDCO is now on its 12th year of operation and caters to financial products in the form of various loan types: car/housing/business, buy-out, hold-out, consolidated, regular, medical, appliance, calamity, GCard, petty cash, purchase order, express, rice, rediscounting of checks, monetization and terminal pays.

It also owns and manages a cafeteria, gasoline stations, water station/ice cube supply, dietary services, laundry services, a pharmacy and grocery, produces hollow blocks and pavers, photocopying/lamination services, ID photo and large format photo printing photo, van rental, mug printing and also supplies organic fertilizers.

GLEDCO currently has total assets of P411,827,945 as of March 2014 with 2,000 members.

The 12-year old cooperative started to reap awards in 2006 as the Cooperative of the Year Award in the provincial level until it became a yearly awardee in the province and then in the entire region.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
