NFA boosts stocks for lean months

San Juan, La Union—The National Food Authority in Region I received an additional 120,000 bags of imported rice from Vietnam intended to boost its stocks for the lean months.

Director Carlito G. Co said that the imported rice, which arrived last week at Poro Port in San Fernando, La Union is part of the 800,000 MT imported rice which the government bid out early this year.

From the 800,000 MT total volume to be imported by the government, Mr. Co said Region I have been allocated 1.4 million bags which will be distributed to the provinces under the region’s jurisdiction.

“This is actually the second shipment that the region received from the 800,000 MT imported rice. The first shipment was unloaded during the first week of May and we are expecting for other shipments for the region this month of July. We hope that all allocations for the region will be shipped by August.” Co said.

According to Director Co, the said imported rice will be sold to the consuming public at P32.00 per kilogram but clarified that the NFA has not increased its selling price but only introduce a new variety to give the rice consuming public a choice.

“The price of NFA rice will remain stable at P27 per kilogram for our 25 percent brokens variety and P32 per kilogram for our 15 percent brokens variety. This is to give our consumers a choice what variety they would want to buy.”

Mr. Co also said that the coming of the imported rice will help to bring down prices of commercial rice as the NFA has increased the allocation of its accredited rice outlets and has opened additional outlets to best serve the rice consuming public.

“Our current rice stocks can last until September this year or until the next harvest season in the last quarter. We are assuring the public that we will continue to have a supply of a low priced quality rice in our markets and also hope that with additional outlets and allocations to our accredited retailers, price of commercial rice will start to go down”, Mr. Co stressed.

Mr. Co added that the agency also intensified the monitoring activities of its Palengke Watch Teams to make sure of the availability of rice in the market and to make sure that the price of the commodity remains reasonable.

“We have to monitor the markets to make sure that our retailers would not abuse the situation. We have to make sure of the availability of rice and that NFA rice will reach the markets and our end consumers”, Mr. Co said.

Mr. Co further said that those who will be caught diverting and overpricing of NFA rice will be dealt with the full force of the law.
