Batac
City—A majority of councilors in this city
voted down a proposed ordinance that would have granted a death and burial
assistance to legitimate tricycle drivers and operators here.
The measure, sponsored by
Batac Vice Mayor Ronald Allan M. Nalupta and which calls for a P10,000 death
and burial assistance to tricycle drivers and operators, was disapproved by
seven councilors on its second reading.
Mr. Nalupta later expressed
surprise for the disapproval as he stressed that the assistance would also be
sourced from the taxes the tricycle drivers and operators pay to the city
government.
“Daytoy ket arig na isub-subli wennu sub-subalitan tayo iti panangited
da iti serbisyo kadagiti kakailian ken ekonomiya iti Batac,” the vice mayor
explained.
Records show that the city
government collects at least P1.6 million from tricycles drivers and operators
annually. Based on Mr. Nalupta’s estimate, the death assistance would only
amount to P254,000.
As it stood only four
councilors voted for the measure: councilors Medeldorf Gaoat, Elmer Pungtilan,
Ibarra Crisostomo and Wynet Quidang.
After the voting, Mr. Nalupta
requested a copy of the list of councilors who thumbed down the measure saying
he would inform tricycle operators and drivers.
Mr. Nalupta later disclosed
that the measure was a suggestion of tricycle associations in the city.
