Laoag City—A member of the Ilocos Norte Sangguniang Panlalawigan is urging the appointment of provincial and city prosecutors to avoid too much delay in the resolution of cases in the province.

In a resolution sponsored by provincial board member, Atty. Da Vinci Crisostomo, he along with other members of the Committee on Laws has requested President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III through the Secretary of the Department of Justice, Atty. Leila De Lima to immediately appoint provincial and city prosecutors in Ilocos Norte to fill in the vacated position of retired provincial prosecutor Maria Calija. Atty. Calija retired from service on August 9.

Also, the cities of Laoag and Batac have yet to have their own full pledged city prosecutors.

According to Atty. Crisostomo, “The lack of prosecutors delay resolution of cases,” which is causing a huge backlog at the Regional Trial Courts and Municipal Trial Courts in the province.

In Ilocos Norte, there are 15 available plantilla positions yet only five public provincial prosecutors are assigned in the province as of today.

As of this posting, it was learned that several applicants for the vacant positions were already forwarded to Malacañang and the DOJ has yet to act on them.

“This goes with the saying, justice delay is justice denied,” Atty. Crisostomo stressed.”

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
