The Late Judge  Efren O. Ramos
Former Regional Trial Court judge and The Ilocos Times publisher and owner, the late Efren O. Ramos Sr., will receive a posthumous recognition award for academic excellence during this year’s golden jubilee celebration and 28th grand alumni homecoming of the Dingras National High School on March 20, 2015.

The former judge holds the singular honor of being the first class valedictorian from the first batch of graduates of the then Dingras Provincial High School in 1947.

“He set the foundational standard for high academic achievement and performance which the generations of students who came after him aimed to emulate, uphold and perpetuate,” General alumni association president Judge Ed Vincent S. Albano explained.

He further explained that his citation will also recognize his long and impressive record in both private and public service. A businessman, a practicing lawyer and the RTC position he last held, friends recall with fondness his compassionate, nurturing, generous and socio-civic-minded nature, invaluable marks that set him distinctly apart from his colleagues and fellow practitioners and, certainly, attributes his Alma Mater would wish her sons and daughters to uphold and propagate.

Aside from the late judge, the golden jubilarians will also recognize four surviving teachers from their batch: Mrs. Felicitas Ballesteros, Mrs. Sabina T. Dancel, Mrs. Dingeña Albano and current President of the Paoay Loomweavers Association, Mrs. Charito Cabulisan Cariaga. The Cañete and Tabaniag families of Dingras will also share the Loyalty Award honors for producing eleven alumni-graduates each from their respective families.

This is the first time, the Dingras National High School Alumni Association will break tradition by allowing the golden jubilarians this year, the DHS Class of 1965, to confer special awards and citations to fellow alumni who distinguished themselves bringing honor and fame to the institution in meritorious ways and capacities.

Judge Albano explained that traditionally the DNHS alumni association is the only body that can confer the yearly awards, the recipients of which mainly come from the class batch being honored, namely the golden jubilarians.

All the above awards will be presented during the morning opening program to be held at the Imee Hall of the Dingras National High School in Dingras town.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
