THE UNITED States Embassy to the
Philippines has allocated P26,400,000 (US$600,000) through the United States
Agency for International Development (USAID) for relief efforts of those
displaced by the Zamboanga City standoff.
“The United States has always
been there for the Philippines in times of need, and we continue that tradition
today for those suffering in Zamboanga,” US Ambassador Harry K. Thomas said in
a statement released to the media
USAID, through its local partner Growth with Equity in
Mindanao (GEM), procured 5,000 bottled water, 1,500 sleeping mats, blankets,
toothbrushes, buckets and canned goods for distribution to evacuees.
The US aid agency expects to procure a total of 10,000
units of the above items to further help those displaced by the standoff.
In addition to this, USAID is also supporting the
construction of 40 portable toilets and is currently providing four 500-gallon
water tanks to ensure better sanitation and access to water for the evacuees.
