San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte—With two robbery cases that shocked the municipality, local officials here are mulling the putting up of surveillance systems through a CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) ordinance.

San Nicolas Mayor Melanie Grace P. Valdez said she was surprised when she learned that a big international company and a pawnshop in this town did not have a CCTV system which could have been used to help the police in solving the robbery case. The pawnshop also did not employ a security guard.

She added that the non-installation of a CCTV system is a violation of requirements for pawnshops. She explained that pawnshops are required to have vaults, security guards and CCTV system among others.

The CCTV ordinance proposal was welcomed by San Nicolas police chief P/Chief Insp. Dominic Guerrero.

Guerrero said the CCTV system would help them in keeping peace and order in the municipality as this aids them in their investigation and at the same time serves as deterrence for would-be criminals.

With this development, Ms. Valdez instructed Guerrero to study the strategic areas where CCTV cameras would be set up. This however would be dependent on the availability of the municipality’s fund.

The CCTV ordinance proposal is currently being tackled at the Sangguniang Bayan.
