City—The Department of Agriculture (DA) here
continues to distribute certified seeds to Ilocos Norte famers to sustain its
lead as one of the top rice producers in the country.
In preparation for the third
cropping season, at least 25 farmer-beneficiaries from Bacarra, Ilocos Norte
received sacks of certified seeds from the Office of the Provincial Agriculture
(OPAG).
Provincial Agriculturist
Norma Lagmay said the recipients came from at least nine farming villages in
Bacarra which were hard hit by previous typhoon. These are Brgys. Corocor, Libtong, Pasngal, Cadaratan,
Bani, Pasiocan, Buyon, Libtong and Ganagan.
According to OPAG, the
beneficiaries received an average of one to five sacks of certified seeds based
on their land area.
For two consecutive years
now, rice farmers in Ilocos Norte have been consistently recognized as one of
the top 12 Agri-Pinoy Rice Achievers in the country as they continue to plant
high-yielding varieties such as certified and hybrid rice seeds.
The certified seeds
distribution program of the Ilocos Norte government in cooperation with the DA
hopes to sustain rice self-sufficiency particularly in areas affected by
typhoon to provide immediate recovery, relief and rehabilitation.
