City—The partnership between the Laoag City
government and the Government of Laoag Employees Development Cooperative
(GLEDCO) is getting stronger after the cooperative donated P2 million worth of
solid waste management equipment for the city government’s use.
GLEDCO general manager Edgar
Pascual said the P2 million donation is their corporate social responsibility
(CSR) project for the city for the 2014-15.
GLEDCO earlier committed to
donate P1 million every year to the city government.
The donation is sourced from
GLEDCO raffle program proceeds, which is being held at least twice a year. In
the said program, P500,000 is earmarked as donation to the city government.
In 2012, GLEDCO donated P1
million worth of heavy equipment to the city government while in 2013, GLEDCO
gave P1 million as counterpart to the city government for the purchase of a new
ambulance.
Last year, the P1 million
commitment was deferred because of the expansion program of GLEDCO’s Sunshine
Recycling Facility (SRF).
GLEDCO however promised to
give back the P1 million commitment last year for this year to make it P2
million.
Mr. Pascual disclosed though that
they are still on the planning stage on what type of equipment to be purchased
but are leaning towards dump and elf trucks which would be used for the
collection of recyclable wastes. A counterpart funding is also expected from
the city government.
Mr. Pascual added that for
every GLEDCO donation, the city government should also provide a counterpart
project.
In addition to this, Mr. Pascual
related that GLEDCO has started buying recyclable materials from some of the
barangays here for conversion into organic fertilizers, hollow blocks and
paving blocks.
Laoag Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas
expressed her gratitude to GLEDCO for their continued support of the city
government’s programs, this time on waste management.
The mayor said the latest
GLEDCO program would also help barangays and households find additional income
if they are going to sell their recyclable wastes.
