Batac exec urges new high school establishment

Batac City—With the increasing number of elementary graduates in the northeastern portion of this city, local education officials have proposed the establishment of a new secondary school to be built at Brgy. Rayuray.

Batac education superintendent Vilma Eda said a feasibility study was already conducted for the said project. The study however was for Brgy. Baoa, a neighboring barangay of Rayuray. The said study was already submitted to the office of Batac Mayor Jeffrey Jubal C. Nalupta.

In a series of consultation dialogue conducted at the said portion of the city, residents said their elementary graduates either go to Batac National High School-Bungon Campus or to the secondary schools in this city’s commercial area.

But with the data the education officials gathered, they discovered that more elementary graduates no longer pursue secondary education due to financial issues. On top of those issues are transportation allowances and school fees, among others.

With the establishment of the proposed new high school, Ms. Eda said the Dept. of Education will provide teachers and funding. However, should the education department fail to provide immediately, she said they would need the assistance of the city government to fund the new school for that time until the national government could provide the necessary funding.

She added that they would also need a lot for the school, which could be provided by the city government.

New study asked
Members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod meanwhile asked the education official to conduct a new feasibility study, this time with Brgy. Rayuray as site.

Original plans for the new school was for it to be built at Baoa but after the consultation, it was suggested that the school be located at Rayuray as the said area has a vacant lot and that it was more the center of the said area.

This measure was however deferred, with Batac Vice Mayor and council presiding officer Ronald Allan M. Nalupta citing the fact that the DepEd is not under the control of the city government. He explained that they should just instead express support for the project.

However, the council also would still need to know the specific location of the proposed school so they could also conduct public hearings on the matter, especially for those concerned.

The proposed new high school is seen to cater to Brgys. Rayuray, Camandingan, Nagbacalan, Baoa West and parts of Baoa East.

Currently, high school students of Baoa East go to Crispina High School while the others goes to Batac National High School at Bungon and other schools in the city’s poblacion area.

Batac at present, has 10 secondary schools: Batac National High School Bungon, Payao and Poblacion Campuses, MMSU High School, Batac Junior College, Immaculate Concepcion Academy, Eureka, Batac Institute, Church of Our Saviour and Crispina High School.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
