Imee orders crack down on high powered arms

LAOAG CITY—Ilocos Norte Governor Ma. Imelda “Imee” R. Marcos has ordered police authorities here to intensify their drive against owners of high powered arms.

“It’s too early for election,” Ms. Marcos said referring to the ambush attempt on Solsona Liga ng mga Barangay President Alex Calucag on June 1, 2015 along the national highway at Brgy. Nalasin in Solsona.

Mr. Calucag’s security escort, PO3 Rodante Julian, however was killed during the ambush attempt.

Ms. Marcos condemned the attempt as she ordered police officials in the province to crackdown on loose firearms.

MR. Calucag called a local radio reporter at 5:02 p.m. to seek help because he and his police escort were ambushed.

Mr. Calucag had just come from a council session at the Solsona town hall and was driving his black Mitsubishi Montero on his way home when he was attacked by still unidentified armed men.

Police said Mr. Calucag, although wounded, was able to drive the vehicle away from the gunmen but Julian, who was on the front passenger seat, died instantly.

Mr. Calucag had bullet wounds in the face, arms and body and was taken to the Gov. Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital in Laoag City, police said.

The Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) recovered at least 14 empty shells of 5.56 armalite rifle and two empty shells of .45 caliber pistol at the crime scene.

Charles Tadena, Liga ng mga Barangay provincial federation president in Ilocos Norte, said Mr. Calucag has received death threats early this year, prompting him to request a police security escort. 

In a related development, acting police provincial director Albert Ocon immediately ordered hot pursuit operation against the gunmen.

Good leader
Ms. Marcos described Mr. Calucag as a “good leader” and she vouched that he is unlikely to do any unlawful activity.

“As we all know, he is a nationally awarded outstanding young farmer, he’s a community leader, he’s a fearless barangay official,” the governor said.

Alarmed about the growing crime rate in Solsona, the governor stressed the need to secure the town as well as urged security forces to be on alert and investigate on the increasing possession of high powered illegal firearms in the town.

“We have a very low crime incidence [in Ilocos Norte] but with Solsona’s growing violence these past few months, we are very distraught about this. It appears that there are many high powered illegal firearms in Solsona. It’s important that the police and even the army are on alert,” she stressed

Meanwhile, the governor assured that “Solsona is still a peaceful place” and reminded the residents to be very careful and not to be terrified with the incident.


“[We hope that Solsona ABC President] Alex Calucag will make it despite all the shot and despite the severe damage to his body. We also pray for [PO3 Julian] who unfortunately died in line of duty,” Ms. Marcos stated. (With a report from PGIN-CMO)

Pagudpud’s tourism transformer passes away

Ricardo Nolasco Jr., owner of Hannah’s Beach Resort and Convention Center in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte passed away on Wednesday evening, July 11, 2018.
