Paoay,
Ilocos Norte—Unknown to many, the Suba beach in Paoay is also an exciting site
for surfing.
Sponsored by the Department of Tourism in cooperation of
the local government unit of Paoay, at least 20 surfing instructors from La
Union came to the heritage town of Paoay on May 30-31 to explore its surfing
potential and boost its tourism activities here.
Open to interested individuals, the free surfing clinic was
held for the first time at the Suba beach, said James Galano, one of the event
coordinators from the Paoay government.
Last March, a group of professional divers explored the
coastal area of Paoay and identified the exotic Suba beach as ideal site for
surfing due to its high waves.
Aside from the two-day surfing clinic, Mr. Galano said
they also organized a simultaneous beach volleyball and sandcastle activity
exclusive for Paoay residents.
Famous for its extensive sand dunes sprawling about 800
meters wide, Suba beach is a popular destination for tourists wanting to
experience off-road driving. It has also become a hit for movie makers with
Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July and Temptation Island shot at the
dunes of Suba.
The same site is also home to “Elsa” and “Flavio”
sculptures played by Philippine superstar Nora Aunor from the
internationally-acclaimed and iconic Filipino film “Himala” and the “King of
Philippine Movies” and national artist, Fernando Poe Jr.
