Marcos,
Ilocos Norte—A town councilor was shot and wounded by still unidentified
suspects at about 10:30 am on September 30 in this town, a police report said.
Police said
Marcos town councilor Stewart dela Cruz was driving his Starex van along
Barangay Pacifico when he was fired upon by the suspects who were reportedly on
foot and fled heading east.
The victim
sustained a gunshot wound in his left knee and managed to escape from the
suspects. He was later on brought to the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital in
Batac City for treatment.
Empty shells of
M16 rifle were recovered at the crime scene. The victim's vehicle had at least
10 traces of bullets that entered mostly at the driver's side.
As of press
time, investigators have yet to identify the motive of the ambush incident.
The victim's
family said they have no idea why someone would attempt to kill the victim.
However, Atty.
Ferdinand Ignacio related in a radio interview that his client (Dela Cruz) was
the respondent in the filing of disqualification charges against proclaimed Marcos
Mayor Arsenio Agustin.
According to
Ignacio, his client may have known who are the suspects and the mastermind
behind the assassination attempt.
In a separate
interview, Agustin condemned the attempted killing of the town councilor saying
he is deeply concerned about the peace and order situation in his municipality.
Though Dela
Cruz is known to be an ally of former Marcos Mayor Salvador Pillos who at
present, still refuses to vacate his office at the municipal hall, Agustin said
he had already forgotten about the past election and is just waiting for the
final ruling of the Supreme Court on his disqualification case.
