Laoag City police
acting chief P/Supt. Jeffrey Gorospe announced that they have started
implementing the gun ban in preparation for the barangay elections on October
28.
The election
gun ban started on September 28, 2013 and would last until November 12, 2013.
The police have
set up checkpoints in different parts of the city and Gorospe has warned
individuals here not to carry their firearms if they have no exemption from the
Commission on Elections.
Violators would
be charged with illegal possession of firearms and violation of the election
gun ban, according to Gorospe.
Meanwhile, city
elections officer Atty. John Paul Martin thanked the city police for the immediate
gun ban implementation through checkpoints.
Relative to
this, Martin said that there will be a command conference between the province
and the city election offices for a briefing on how to conduct proper
checkpoints to avoid undue harassments.
Martin
disclosed that in this barangay election, the Comelec en banc has not handed
down a specific resolution on the gun ban. He added that the gun ban provision
for the recent midterm election last May was simply adopted by the poll body.
