San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte—The Dept. of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) second engineering district head Engr. Mathias Malenab announced that their 12-day Lakbay Alalay program was successful.

Mr. Malenab said the program, which started on Dec. 24, 2014 and ended on Jan. 4, 2015, did not encounter any major problems.

He added that the task force responded to only minor incidents as well as a rice husks fire which occurred near the national highway along San Nicolas on Dec. 30. The fire was put out with the help of the San Nicolas fire station.

The project aimed to assist the motorists travelling to and from Ilocos Norte during the holiday season. It is similar to tourist assistance centers put up by local government units to help travelers.

The DPWH second engineering district office established four stations in the second district and which were open 24/7 for 12 days. The task force were stationed in case of minor repairs of vehicles, minor tune ups, minor troubleshooting, as well as giving information on directions.

Mr. Malenab said this is a regular DPWH program of during long vacations like the Christmas season and the Holy Week.

Relative to this, only two projects that were not finished last year are the Nagbibingacaan Bridge in Batac City and the San Lorenzo Bridge in San Nicolas but they hope to complete these soon.

DPWH record shows that around nine projects will start and majority of these are for road widening and are expected to be constructed upon release of necessary funds.
