The Ilocos Surian Ass’n of Hawaii’s 2nd President Elpidio Quirino Award 2015 backgrounder

THE ILOCOS Surian Association of Hawaii (ISAH) is a non-profit umbrella group of all organizations from the Province of Ilocos Sur. Its goal is to perpetuate the Filipino culture in the State of Hawaii and provide invaluable community service here in Hawaii and in Ilocos Sur.

One of its annual program is the “President Elpidio Rivera Quirino Award” (PERQ Award), a biennial event that recognizes outstanding Filipinos who come from Ilocos Sur, and who have called Hawaii their home, for their excellence and accomplishments in their field of expertise, as well as civic mindedness and sustaining service to the community-at-large. It was inspired by the sixth president of the Republic of the Philippines, Elpidio Quirino, a native of Vigan. He was a barrio schoolteacher, an orator, a debater, a painter, a constitutionalist, a statesman, and a lawmaker. 

Currently, ISAH is in the process of vetting qualified nominees for the “President Elpidio Rivera Quirino Award 2015”. Winners in each category will selected based on their past and current accomplishments and the contributions they made in their respective fields.

Nomination Forms sent to ISAH must be postmarked no later than March 2, 2015. Winners will be notified thru the phone, e-mail, or postal mail by the Chairperson on or before March 12, 2015. The PERQ Awards Banquet will be held on May 2, 2015.

Award categories

A. An individual may be nominated for one of the six available awards. Judging shall take into consideration the nominees’ accomplishments as specified in the questionnaire and selection criteria of the Nomination Form. 


B. The “APO PIDIONG TROPHY Hawaii” is a well-deserved recognition to distinguish the nominee who by his/her exemplary efforts and achievements, have given honor and prestige to Ilocos Surians of Hawaii. The awardee has proven that the spirit of “Ilocos Sur” continues to flourish, inspiring others to help uplift the lives of Filipinos in leadership and humanitarian endeavors. 

C. The “APO PIDIONG TROPHY Ilocos Sur” is a well-deserved recognition to distinguish the nominee who by his/her exemplary efforts and achievements, have given honor and prestige to Ilocos Surians from our home town. The awardee has proven that the spirit of “Ilocos Sur” continues to flourish, inspiring others to help uplift the lives of Filipinos in leadership and humanitarian endeavors. 

D. The “GABRIELA SILANG TROPHY for Ilocana of the Year” shall be presented to an Ilocano female person who has committed her service to the Ilocos Surian Association of Hawaii and her pursuit of equity in women’s issues and advocacies. Gabriela Silang is known the Joan of Arc in Ilokandia. 

E. The “ISABELO DELOS REYES Trophy for Labour Activism” shall be presented to an individual who has committed his or her service to the Ilocos Surian Association of Hawaii and his pursuit of unity among Filipinos in Hawaii. Champion of Labor Union and co-founder of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente-Philippine Independent Church with Gregorio Aglipay. 

F. The “BENITO SOLIVEN TROPHY for Outstanding Youth” shall be presented to young Ilocano person who has committed his or her service to the Ilocos Surian of Hawaii and his pursuit of unity among Filipinos in Hawaii. The awardee must be between 16-25 years old and younger. Benito Soliven is a Champion of the Philippine Legislature during his time as a lawmaker.

G. The “LEON PICHAY TROPHY for Culture and the Arts” shall be presented to an individual who has committed his or her service to the Ilocos Surian Association of Hawaii and his/her commitment and perpetuation of Ilocano culture and traditions in Hawaii. Leon Pichay is a great poet, writer, orator, debater and author.


Submission format and deadline
A. The Nomination Form and information therein must be typewritten or legibly written and submitted with salient attachments only. 

B. Submit Nominee’s 3 X 5 picture, (preferably a recent photo).

C. Failure to furnish all necessary information as required shall render the nomination incomplete.

D. Nomination Forms must be fully completed and sent to ISAH thru Postal mail, e-mail, or fax on or before February 15, 2015:

Eligibility

A. Nominee has never won the same category in a previous Quirino Award conducted by ISAH.

B. Nominee is of Filipino ancestry. 

C. Nominee is a current resident in the State of Hawaii and has established residency for not less than 2 years preceding the submission deadline; except for the Ilocos Sur awardee for Apo Pidiong Trophy.

D. Nominee has never been convicted of any criminal offense.

PGIN honors Ilocano heroes of past, present through Heroes Walk

Pagudpud’s tourism transformer passes away

Ricardo Nolasco Jr., owner of Hannah’s Beach Resort and Convention Center in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte passed away on Wednesday evening, July 11, 2018.
