Vintar, Ilocos Norte—Residents of this town gathered along the
main street corner here on Dec. 29, 2014 as they showcased a
decade-old tradition of dudol-making,
a popular native rice cake which has waned with the advent of instant and ready-to-cook
snacks today.
From 10 am to 3 pm on Dec.
29, the long stretch of the Vintar municipal hall all the way to the Florencio
Camaquin Integrated School were filled with assembled kiosks, each one has its
own makeshift cooking stove, sinublan
[a large clay pot] and some major cooking ingredients for dudol such as diket [glutinous
rice], grated coconut, molasses and crushed peanuts.
“The event is part of our
town festival to showcase our long time Ilocano tradition especially to the
younger generation. This time, we have chosen dudol cook fest as a way of reviving a delicious Ilocano merienda which is now almost forgotten,”
said Joey Leaño, coordinator of the “Fiesta de Dudol”.
Participated in by at least
55 cooking masters representing the different villages and departments of the
municipal government unit, Mr. Leaño said Vintar used to have
vast areas planted with sugarcane, a major ingredient in dudol making.
As part of the whole-day
festivity, everyone including curious visitors feasted on the delicious merienda, with cash prizes and a
certificate of recognition in various categories such as best cooked dudol, best presentation and most eaten.
“We wish to popularize this delicious Ilocano snack to our children who are no longer familiar to it and they do not even know how to pronounce dudol it, Mr. Leaño said as he stressed Vintar residents once have the best tasting dudol merienda in town and this tradition shall live from generation to generations.
