The
Marcoses has a new lawyer.
This time, he is in the
person of Ferdinand Richard Michael Marcos Manotoc, second son of Ilocos Norte
Governor Ma. Imelda “Imee” R. Marcos and her estranged husband champion
basketball coach Tomas Manotoc.
The 28-year old Manotoc is
one of the law graduates from the University of the Philippines who passed the
2013 bar examinations announced by the Supreme Court on March 18.
Glad for his son’s latest
success, Ms. Marcos said she is happy for Michael.
“Proud of my fourth
generation UP law son, even if I didn’t want him to be a lawyer, I am so happy
he is one now!” Marcos said in a text message.
The New York
University-educated grandson of the late former Pres. Ferdinand E. Marcos may
have taken after his mom’s love for law and acting as the young Manotoc has
also taken a short term course at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London
before he entered UP’s College of Law.
When asked about his mom’s
initial reaction, he said, “With my mom, she’s worked with the system for so
long and she was a little bit hesitant that one of his children has to deal
with our system so she wasn’t sure but when she found out that it was me who
wanted to do it, pumayag naman siya.”
He said he was inspired by
stories about his grandfather, who was a topnotch lawyer during his time.
“For things happening in the
government, being a lawyer is a worthwhile profession,” he said as he reported
he is now working in a law firm for some time now and he plans to practice law
soon.
“Hopefully, we can be a part
of improving the rule of law in the Philippines and maybe even the government
as a whole,” he added.
In Ilocos Norte, Ilocanos
here are also rejoicing for having the first batch of attorneys produced by the
Mariano Marcos State University’s College of Law whose five students passed out
of the 13 total bar-takers, or a passing average of 38.46 percent.
Thirty seven year-old Moera
Joy Galing-Luna, married to a seaman and a resident of Brgy. Bingao, San
Nicolas, Ilocos Norte said she is thankful for passing the most difficult
examination she has ever taken to fulfill her dad’s dream for her to become a
lawyer.
Luna previously worked in a
law firm in San Nicolas town after she finished Bachelor of Arts in Political
Science at the Northwestern University in Laoag City.
“The MMSU family is proud of
all the 13 candidates and we give our best to the five who passed. The national
average is 22%, MMSU is 38%. Young men and women need not go anywhere for a
good school. It’s here,” said Atty. Ramon Leaño, dean of the MMSU-College of
Law.
The Integrated Bar of the
Philippines-Ilocos Norte Chapter also extends their warmest congratulations to
the new batch of lawyers.
“Welcome to the noblest
profession. We encourage you to have a private practice to experience being a
real lawyer,” said Atty. Josefoz Nerez, president of the local Integrated Bar
of the Philippines chapter.
