DINGRAS, Ilocos
Norte—A five year-old girl was accidentally shot in a remote village of
Barangay Elizabeth of this town at about 12:45 pm on March 13, a police report
said.
Police
investigators said the victim is a resident of Brgy. Elizabeth who accompanied
her uncle, Jeffrey Rico, 30, to feed their farm ducks. Inside a small nipa hut,
Rico said he opened a small bag, found a .38 caliber revolver and accidentally
pulled the trigger and hit the victim’s forehead.
The victim was
rushed to a nearby hospital where she is under critical condition as of press
time.
Police Chief Insp.
Teddy Rosqueta, Dingras police chief, said the victim’s uncle is under their custody
for investigation and inquiry.
For his part,
Dingras Mayor Erdio Valenzuela ordered police investigators to check on loose
firearms circulating here.
According to
Valenzuela, this only shows that there are still loose firearms in this town
and the police has to intensify their campaign against loose firearms.
