The ILOCOS Norte Provincial
Health Office has intensified its anti-measles drive to prevent the spread of
this highly contagious disease this summer.
Dr. Rogelio Balbag, chairperson of the committee
on health of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, has reminded the PHO not to be remiss
in its task to wipe out measles in the province and to ensure that children
ages nine months to five years receive measles vaccination.
In Ilocos Norte,
the PHO reported at least 90 percent high immunization among children. However,
as the summer season is now being felt in the region, the emergence of
summer-related diseases such as measles, sore eyes and diarrhea cannot always be avoided.
Supporting the
Department of Health massive measles vaccination, mobile teams from the PHO has
been conducting outreach programs to villages to provide free vaccination to
children.
Last year, the PHO
has recorded at least 30 cases in the province.
To prevent the
spread of the virus, Balbag urge parents to go to the nearest health center in
their community and have their children complete their vaccination against
measles.
For the PHO,
Balbag has coordinated with the provincial health officer, Dr. Artemio Gambalan
to ensure available supply at all times which can be used in case of outbreak.
“We should always
observe personal hygiene like regular hand washing before and after eating.
Always check the safety of our food and drinking water,” Balbag said.
