San Nicolas,
Ilocos Norte—To recognize the valuable contributions of senior citizens (SC)
with their families and the community as a whole, the municipal government of
San Nicolas approved an ordinance granting free movie privileges to them.
San Nicolas officials see this as one way of
showing their appreciation and gratitude to their senior citizens who had since
become the inspiration of the youth and today’s leader.
The ordinance also aims to re-affirm the
valued Filipino tradition of caring for the elderlies and giving them support
and giving them their needs such as recreations and entertainment.
San Nicolas Vice Mayor Alfredo P. Valdez Jr.,
main author of the ordinance, said all senior citizens that are recognized by
this municipality will enjoy the privilege of watching movies for free from any
of the participating movie houses here.
Valdez explained that any senior citizen is
entitled to avail of this ordinance provided he/she must be resident of San Nicolas for at least one
year; must be a registered voter; and a bona-fide member of a senior citizen association
in the barangay.
Anyone who will be qualified must have an
issued specially designed identification card from the Office of the Mayor and Office
of the Senior Citizens as his/her pass for the entrance together with his/her senior
citizen identification card.
Relative to this, Atty. Reynaldo Corpuz,
who is also one of the authors, said that this municipality headed by the San
Nicolas Mayor Melanie Grace Valdez was authorized to negotiate and enter into a
memorandum of agreement with the movie house owner for reasonable terms with the
least expense to the municipality.
The MOA includes the specific days in a
week that the senior citizen could avail the said free movie privilege.
In a random interview with the senior
citizens here, they expressed their thanks to the municipal government of San
Nicolas headed by Mayor Valdez and the authors for giving them the opportunity
to once again feel and experience their “happenings” during their young days.
