SN eyes revival of traditional games

San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte—The San Nicolas municipal government is poised to revive traditional and indigenous games after the municipal council passed an ordinance mandating the conduct of annual “Paay-ayam Ni San Nicoleño,” an event featuring traditional and indigenous games.

Sanggunian Bayan member Reynaldo Corpuz, one of the authors of the measure, said the ordinance supports the national government in the promotion of physical education, encourages sports programs, league competitions, and amateur sports to include trainings of international competitions to foster self-discipline, teamwork and excellence for the development of a healthy citizenry.

The program aims to foster the preservation, enrichment and dynamic evolution of the Filipino national culture based on the principle of unity.

Corpuz added that the program will be coordinated with the Department of Education and the Liga Ng Mga Barangay.

The Liga Ng Mga Barangay president will be chairman of the committee and all punong barangays as members. In addition, the DepEd supervisor will be a co-chair and school principals, schools sports coordinators both in the elementary and secondary schools as members.

The local chief executive may include the SB chairman of sports and youth development as member of the committee if she deems it fit and proper.

The committee will identify the traditional games and sports to be included in the Paay-ayam as well as the categories and participants and the rules and regulations.

San Nicolas councilor Efren Butay, also one of the authors, said participating teams, persons and entities includes teams in the barangay, youth organizations, employee associations, parents and teachers association, non-government organizations and students both in the elementary and secondary levels.

Butay further stated that an initial fund of P200,000 was appropriated for the implementation and this will be taken from the annual appropriated sports activities and the youth development fund this year.


San Nicolas Liga ng mga barangay president and ex-officio member of the council Linda Badua, also one of the three main sponsors, said the barangay could also utilize their respective sports development fund in their annual budget to support their teams and constituents participate in this program.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops.
