San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte—The multi-awarded San Nicolas municipality again shone in the national arena after it was chosen as one of the most business-friendly local government units in the country. The win this year—third in a row—also elevates the municipality into the search’s Hall of Fame.

San Nicolas officials led by mayor Melanie Grace P. Valdez and vice mayor Alfredo “Boying” P. Valdez received the award for the Most Business-Friendly Municipality Level 1 on Oct. 24 at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila Hotel.

Highly respected businesspersons led by Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) president Alfredo M. Yao personally handed the award to the Valdez couple.

In an interview after receiving the award, Ms. Valdez said she is very thankful to the organizers for choosing San Nicolas as the top winner in its category in the last three years.

She stressed that this proves the municipal government is continuously attracting investors to the town.

SM Prime Holdings is the latest big investor in the town as it opened its Save More Market recently.

To keep in step with the changing times and to attract more investors, the municipal government also amended its local investment code recently. The amendment paves the way in giving more benefits to both the prospective investors and the local work force.

Meanwhile, Mr. Yao in his president’s report first thanked all the business community, the government and other development stakeholders who participated in this 40th Philippine Business Conference (PBC).

Mr. Yao said this year’s PBC seeks to accentuate the best that the Filipino products and services can offer to both the domestic and global fronts.

This year’s theme, “Proudly Pinoy: Partnering Towards Sustained Growth”, highlights the competitiveness of local industries and the quality of Philippine-made products and services.

It is all about promoting the Philippine brand and creating the country’s niches and value additions in the Asean and global value chains, Yao said.

“The 40th PBC is not just a display of the exuberance and passion that is borne of our love for our crafts, but it is a celebration of each and every Filipino firm and individuals making names for themselves in environments where both creativity and quality is required,” Mr. Yao emphasized.

Different business entities, towns, cities, provinces and development stakeholders also showcased their respective products in their own booths.

During the awarding ceremonies, different awards were also given: Media Scholarship Awards; Alfredo M. Yao Intellectual Property Awards; Excellence in Ecology and Economy; Most Business-Friendly LGU Awards and the Most Outstanding Chamber Awards.

Winners for the city category are Valenzuela City for Level 1 and Calapan City for Level 3. Calapan also was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The municipality of San Felipe in Zambales topped category Level II.

For the provincial category, Tarlac was awarded the most business-friendly province and was also inducted into the Hall of Fame.

This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
