Agrarian reform beneficiaries urged to insure crops

The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) here is calling on all qualified agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) to register for crop insurance the department is giving out for free this year.

Rommel Aquino, DAR-Ilocos Norte information officer said agrarian reform officers are now going around Ilocos Norte’s multi-purpose cooperatives, urging member-beneficiaries to protect their crops and livestock from losses due to typhoon and other natural calamities through insurance.

The crop insurance can be availed by agrarian reform beneficiaries or members of ARB households who till or manage farms certified by DAR.

Under the program, each beneficiary is provided with a maximum coverage of up to five hectares. Farms can also be covered by at least four types of insurance. These include rice and corn insurance, high-value commercial crops, livestock insurance and dismemberment security scheme.

Last year, Aquino said that less than P2 million were covered for crop insurance among Ilocos Norte farmer-beneficiaries. The amount was distributed in three consecutive batches.

Not all crop insurance applicants however were granted by the Philippine Crop Insurance Company as some farmer-beneficiaries failed to show proof of land ownership or they have yet to register their farm lots prior to their membership in the cooperative supported by DAR.

The agrarian department hopes that all beneficiaries will take the time to secure the needed requirements and apply for the said program because unlike in previous years, the registration this time is for free.

“There is no fee being collected for registration this time. All they have to do is to register at the PCIC,” Aquino said.
