LC police: Holy Week generally peaceful

Laoag City acting police chief P/Supt. Jeffrey T. Gorospe said the commemoration of the Holy Week in the city was generally peaceful and orderly.

Gorospe thanked the city government and the 80 barangays for extending their help in maintaining the peace as all barangay tanods in the city were used as force multiplier.

Gorospe added that the all Laoag police officers were also put on alert over the Holy Week as all leaves were cancelled.

No untoward incident was reported during the four-day holiday. Gorospe added that tourists visiting the city only asked assistance for directions heading to various tourism destinations.

In view of this, the Laoag government activated its own tourism assistance center to assist tourists. Brochures and flyers about the city and the province’s tourism spots are also available there for free.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops.
