DTI urges Ilocos Norte SMEs to join trade fairs to promote market

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is urging small and medium enterprises here to continue promoting their products by joining trade fairs and exhibit to increase their market.

Beyond the sales generated during fairs, DTI Regional Director Florante Leal told participants during the culminating activity of the summer trade fair and garden show held at the Capitol grounds on April 15 that it is more important that products are exposed to the market.

“The exposure of the product is lasting. The sales will come automatically when you join fairs,” Leal said citing that DTI continues to support product development to assist SMEs in promoting their products.

Also, he said that joining trade fairs serves as an avenue to launch new products to a wider market.

While inspiring other producers to participate in regional and national trade fairs, the DTI regional director said Ilocos Norte’s bagnet and longganisa are the top grossers in the recent food festival held in Metro Manila.

“Our meat products from the Ilocos region are very popular in national trade fairs. In fact, when we go to Visayas and Mindanao, they would be asking us [for] bagnet or longganisa. That’s an indication that our products are exposed and it is one of the best,” he said.

In support of product development, DTI provincial director Benjamin Garcia said SMEs are always welcome to visit their office for assistance.

“If you need anything, come and ask us at the DTI office,” Garcia said.

For an exhibitor like the Cataban weavers of Laoag, Cathy Baided, 40, said their unique products such as bags,  tissue holders, placemats, folders, summer hats and slippers made of water hyacinth has already generated product following with their exposure in trade fairs.

In fact, she noted that orders come from as far as the United States and Southeast Asia in just a span of more than a year of operations.

“We always look forward to join trade fairs like this because this is our time to meet new clients,” Baided said.
