Laoag City beauty is Miss Ilocos Norte 2014

A 21-year old Laoag beauty Czarina Marie Adina was crowned Miss Ilocos Norte 2014 at the pageant held May 7 at the Laoag City Centennial Arena.

The tourism management graduate of the Mariano Marcos State University bested 22 other candidates representing the various municipalities and cities of the province for the first ever Miss Ilocos Norte pageant organized by the Ilocos Norte government under the administration of Gov. Ma. Imelda “Imee” R. Marcos.

The newly crowned Miss Ilocos Norte will join the roster of beauty queens who double as ambassadors for the province’s advocacy on education, tourism and youth affairs.

Aside from a transferable scholarship grant and a charity program of her choice, a one year contract with the Ilocos Norte government shall be accorded to her for winning the competition. She shall help Ilocos Norte’s priority programs on tourism, education and youth development.

Other winners are: Miss Dingras, Maria Khrissa Parado (first runner up); Miss Baccara, Princess Raihanie Salleh (second runner up); Miss Burgos, Sheena Dalo (third runner up); and Miss Bangui, Lyka Mari Bumanglag (fourth runner up).

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
