Loren calls for vote for Vigan as New7Wonders City

SENATOR Lorna Regina “Loren” B. Legarda is calling on all Filipinos all over to world to support Vigan City in its bid to become one of the New7Wonders Cities.

“The search for the New7Wonders Cities is in the last phase with 14 cities remaining in the list. Let us all vote for Vigan City to be included in the final list of the New7Wonders Cities,” said Ms. Legarda.

For the final phase, the voting is from 7 October to 7 December 2014.

Filipinos can vote for Vigan through the website: www.new7wonders.com/en/cities. Voters will choose their 7 wonder cities in the said site.

Voters can also use their phone but they can only choose one city in this manner. Detail on international phone voting can be seen on the website:  www.new7wonders.com/phonevoting.

Ms. Legarda added: “By voting for Vigan City, we express not only our national pride but also our support to integrating the preservation of our culture and heritage in development plans and policies. The preservation of Vigan as a heritage city has not only contributed to the development of the city through gains in tourism but also brought honor to our country.”

Vigan City in Ilocos Sur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As such, it is only the UNESCO heritage city in the Philippines. Earlier, it was given the Best Practice for World Heritage Site Management award by UNESCO in November 2012.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town.
