Batac City—The Department of Agriculture (DA) in cooperation with government research institutions and local government units here continue to assist farmers to help them recover from financial losses due to natural calamities.

On Oct. 9, 467 garlic growers from the garlic growing municipalities and cities of Ilocos Norte lined up in here as Ilocos Norte Governor Ma. Imelda “Imee” R. Marcos led the distribution of garlic seed stock dispersal to beneficiaries in time for the planting season this October.

Under the Sustainable Seed Support System of the Department of Agriculture in partnership with the Mariano Marcos State University, farmers are assured of better quality seed stocks to improve their productivity and revitalize garlic industry here.

A garlic farmer-recipient with at least .25 hectares garlic farm is given at least 100 kilograms of seed stocks while 50 kilograms is also given for farmers with at least .125 hectares of garlic farm.

As government authorities intensify campaign against smuggled garlic products, Ms. Marcos urged more farmers to plant more garlic, the province is known for as the top producer of native garlic.

With the help of the MMSU in its drive to improve quality seed stocks through continuous research and innovations, the governor hopes that more Ilocos farmers will be inspired to plant more garlic and help alleviate poverty in countryside.

Aside from the garlic seed dispersal, hybrid and certified rice seeds are also being distributed to farmers here ready for the next cropping season.
