Batac
City—As a show of support to athletes here who
excel in regional and national meets, the Sangguniang Panlungsod has passed a
resolution requesting Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) through its
president, Dr. Miriam E. Pascua to provide them with scholarship grants.
Batac councilor Gwyneth Quidang,
author of the resolution, stressed that this is just one way to support local
athletes who represent the city in regional and national sports competitions.
Ms. Quidang said MMSU is
currently offering athletic scholarships to Ilocos Norte athletes who excel in
regional and national sports meet.
Since Batac now has a
separate sports team after it became a city, Ms. Quidang said they should also
now have separate scholarship grants from MMSU.
The resolution was
unanimously approved by the councilors present during the session as Ms.
Quidang requested the presiding officer that all those who voted for the
measure become co-sponsors, including Batac
vice mayor Ronald Allan M. Nalupta.
According to Ms. Quidang, the
existing scholarship grants MMSU offers started during the administration of
former Ilocos Norte governor Michael M. Keon for college freshmen who excel in
region and national competitions. At the time, Batac was included for the grant
as it was still a municipality then and as such part of the Ilocos Norte team.
But after its conversion into
a city and was then fielding its own team, the scholarship grants for Batac
athletes ceased.
The resolution, Ms. Quidang
said is for Batac athletes to qualify again for the scholarship grant.
