Laoag gov’t urges barangays to install own CCTV system

Laoag City—Citing the need to step up efforts to prevent crime and to keep peace and order in the city, Laoag mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas has thrown her support for the proposal to have barangays in Laoag install their own closed-circuit television (CCTV) system.

This move, she said, would also prod technological advancement for the barangays in looking over the growing population here.

Primarily, the CCTV system would help the police in monitoring illegal activities in the province as well as fast response to accidents.

Ms. Fariñas disclosed that several barangay officials have already signified their intention to put up their own CCTV system through their equal sharing account for next year.

The neophyte mayor stressed that the CCTV system is most applicable for urban barangays in the city since these are the areas where crowds and motorists flock to every day.

She added that this project would also either prevent crimes or hasten their resolution.

12 barangays begin CCTC installation
Laoag City government information officer Franz Reginald Felipe reported that 12 barangays have already began installation of their CCTV systems. Among those are the Gabu and La Paz barangays as well as Brgys. 16 and Suyo.

Mr. Felipe also clarified that the barangays respective CCTV system mother units would be in their barangay halls and would be manned and operated by barangay officials.

However, he added that his office is currently looking into possibilities of linking with the barangay CCTVs to the City Hall main frame.

Reacting to this, Brgy. 2 (Sta. Joaquina) chairperson Joseph A. Miguel said he favors this move as it would help in monitoring illegal activities in their barangay.

Mr. Miguel mentioned that this project has already been included in their annual budget next year. The number of CCTV cameras however would depend on the availability of their funds. He hopes that they would be able to install at least one in each of their barangay’s sitios.

He however clarified that Brgy. 2 is basically crime-free as the peace and order is being maintained by their tanods and other peacekeepers. No carjacking incident, he said, has been reported in his barangay.

Police chief lauds project
Laoag police chief P/Supt. Jeffrey T. Gorospe, for his part, lauded this move by the city government.

He explained that this is not a mere simple project but would impact positively the daily lives of Laoag residents as this could prevent crimes in the city.

He emphasized that CCTV footages are a big help in solving crimes especially in areas where there are no police sub-stations.

The project, he added, would also help them solve the lack of personnel in the city.

Mr. Gorospe also appealed to all barangay tanods and other law enforcers to again help the police maintain peace and order as the Yuletide Season nears.

He stressed that theft—from snatching to pickpocketing—and other illegal activities increase during this time of the year.

Marcos town celebrates 3rd Pinakbet Festival

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte—Taking pride of this town ’s favorite Ilo cano dish, locally known as pinakbet, a mix of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet ’ which means “ shrunk ” or “shriveled.” As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet festival is a repository of the town ’ s “ani” [harvest] festival being celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the festivity. Residents in this agricultural town derived most of their income from the harvest of high value crops, including rice, tobacco and corn as staple crops. This year, the week-long festivity highlighted a grand parade around the town plaza and a pinakbet cook fest at the municipal gymnasium to showcase the best pinakbet in town. A boodle fight followed suit. Earlier, a fun run was participated by various groups ...
