Laoag City—The city government here is set to consider the request of Muslim residents in the city about the preparation of meats at the city slaughterhouse.

The request came to light after Laoag councilor Ferdinand Domingo, chairperson of the council’s committee on market and slaughterhouse, presented a request from the Muslim community about the process of slaughtering hogs and cows.

In what became his committee-related report, Mr. Domingo said chopping of butchered hogs and cows should be separated as Muslims do not eat pork.

In view of this, he said the Muslim community wanted a separate chopping areas for butchered cows and hogs at the slaughterhouse.

Mr. Domingo plans to introduce a measure regarding this matter but he must first solicit the suggestions of the market superintendent, the City Health Office and the council’s committee on health.

Fellow councilor Joseph H. Tamayo also said he received the same request from another Muslim who also serves as Barangay 1 kagawad.

Mr. Tamayo also suggested separate butchering areas for cows and pigs.

Laoag Vice mayor and council presiding officer Michael V. Fariñas has instructed Mr. Domingo to coordinate with the market superintendent relative to this matter.

Barangay 1 chairperson Darwin Domingo meanwhile disclosed that there was an ordinance passed by their council regarding a separate space at the slaughterhouse intended for the Muslim community, unfortunately it was disapproved by the city council.

However when councilor Domingo visited the barangay recently, the request was reiterated and barangay chief Domingo agreed to the request considering Brgy. 1 hosts the Muslim compound in the city.
